Health insurance premiums have been the hot topic of the past few weeks, and I am happy to give voice to the worries of so many Minnesotans; however, I heard something I hadn’t heard in a while and it reminded me of the bigger picture in this election.
Question: Is the money you earn yours?
I proposed allowing individuals to deduct their health insurance premiums from their income and have heard from two different people that letting someone take a deduction is a “subsidy” and a “government expenditure.”
The Democrats believe that they have a right to your earnings, and letting you keep it is a government expenditure.
If you think that a deduction from taxes is the same as a subsidy, then are the standard deductions, mortgage deductions, child care deductions all subsidies?
I believe that what you earn is yours and letting you keep it is not a government expense.
